Margaret Holmes
I’ve been painting for as long as I can remember. I have used oil paints, watercolour, acrylic and now prefer pastels. I have been on many courses, read books, watched Youtube etc. and I believe I have found my niche in painting animals of all kinds. I do commissions for pets normally (but can do landscapes/seascapes) – dogs, cats and even horses. I work mainly from photographs, which I take when required. I have been a member of the Haxby & Wigginton Art Group since 1983 when I moved over to York. I am also a member of other groups around the York area and help with scenery for a local pantomime group near Whitby.

Steve Hawker enrolled onto a York Learning beginners art course in September 2019, progressing steadily and in December 2023 won a national award, the King Lear Prize for Art. Steve predominately works in acrylics but has also completed commissioned pieces in pencil. He has participated in the York River Art Market for the last two years and has displayed work at the Halifax Open Gallery, the Doncaster On-line Gallery and Badger in the Wall Gallery in Clapham. He also creates amusing greetings cards and York themed Christmas cards, which have been on sale at two retail outlets in York. Steve’s Instagram

Hazel Hanson
I paint in acrylics for fun. Being part of the Art Group is a real encouragement and inspiration to paint and share in a relaxed and friendly group.

Steve Williams
I’m self-taught, work mostly in acrylics and have been a happy member of the art group for about 2 years.

Hi, I’m Wendy Shaw, I have always liked to draw but have never done anything until I joined Haxby/Wigginton art group in my 60’s. I am partially sighted. I like to paint with watercolour although I have done acrylics and am doing some pictures with coloured pencils and like to do plain old pencil drawings.

Tim Bos After a career in teaching, I went to evening classes and for the last 15 years have experimented with different styles of drawing and painting to capture the emotions and aesthetics of life’s special moments. Work has been sold and exhibited but I don’t paint to sell. The joy is in the time spent in creating something new.

Hello, my name is Anna Pearson. I have been attending the group for several years now. I often get inspiration from our fellow artists which means I dare to try different ways to make a mess on paper, either with sticky collage, sponges, fingers (don’t lick them) and sometimes a paint brush. Here is a sample of one of my neater pictures. One can make an interesting picture out of the most mundane material. This man was not happy with his work that day but luckily he’ll never recognise himself from this picture.

Kevin Younger has been a member of HWAG for a number of years, joining the Group to help develop his painting skills and share their enthusiasm for art. Working in acrylic paints, developing his own style, concentrating on landscapes. This year he has developed a range of blank greetings cards, using his paintings, which are on sale at this exhibition.

Linda Harrison: I am a York born self-taught artist and I have been painting and drawing since 2015 and have been a member of then Art Group since 2017. My work is influenced by the natural world with an emphasis on vibrant and uplifting colour, which can vary from abstracts to still life and animals. The mediums I enjoy creating with include coloured pencils, watercolours, inks and oil paint. Commissioned art work I have produced include several pet portraits and book illustrations. John Sparrow is a retired academic with a lifelong passion for art. After retirement in 2011 art is now a major preoccupation. He has discovered a deep interest in art history and developed art skills/practice through local art classes run by inspirational tutors (Tim Morrison, Karen Winship, Phil Reynolds), attended live workshops and studied on-line courses. He has exhibited regularly in York in recent years.

Cliff Riordan: I enjoy working in a variety of mediums including acrylics, pen and wash, charcoal, lino cut and mono printing. My recent painting tends towards seascapes., getting inspiration from holiday photos. This “work in progress” is the rocky beach at Afitos, Greece (acrylic on board).

Lin Burrage: I started painting only after retiring and wish I had done so earlier, there is so much to learn. I enjoy painting landscapes especially trees in acrylic and also use a palette knife for more abstract pictures. I also love watercolour, using it for more delicate work on smaller botanical paintings.
